4/28/11. The winners of the second annual iHeART Baltimore Creative Arts Competition have been announced! Congratulations to Tranya Tisdale, Afri’kiia Robertson and Zakiya Sewell! Thank you as well to all who sent submissions on the "safe sleep" theme.

Overview

The Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) launched its social media presence in February 2010 to more effectively coordinate and communicate health-related messages and information to a broader audience. BCHD has opened accounts with Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, all of which are connected to the BCHD Website.

Because of their organic structure and interactive and viral nature, social media outlets serve as ideal platforms through which to creatively and actively engage the public on health.

The new social media presence at BCHD has allowed the development and piloting of iHeART Baltimore, a creative arts campaign focused on health topics that matter to Baltimoreans. iHeART invites community residents, especially youth and students, to share their views, concerns, and experiences through a series of topic-based competitions. All participants are encouraged (though not required) to post their submissions to the BCHD Facebook page. All winning submissions (with creator permission) will be shared with the public through BCHD's social media outlets.

The goal of iHeART is to generate community-driven awareness and dialogue about health issues. The hope is that, by using the creative arts as a medium and by harnessing the power of social media, Baltimore residents will be able to re-infuse their own discussions with a vibrancy and relevance that is sometimes missing from traditional health communication.

Details about the next creative arts competition will be posted in the future to our Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as this Web page.
